Marc and Marilyn and Andrew!

Marilyn always talked about doing a race together.  Well, we finally decided to sign up for one…the Playa del Run at the Dockweiler.  We decided to sign up a few weeks back and I tried to make sure Marilyn was physically ready for the race.  I’ve ran with Marilyn before and she runs great…her biggest issue is that she gets bored when she’s running.  To try to help her with this issue, I tried to make our practice runs “fun.”  We would run in the track and would alternate running around the track while the other hangs out with Andrew.  Think of it as interval training with Andrew  Unfortunately, we were only able to run 3 times in preparation for the race.  I promise she’ll be more ready for her next race.

As race day got closer, Marilyn began to worry.  She was worried she wasn’t going to do well.  I tried to tell her not to worry about the details and to just enjoy the experience.  While I do a lot of races, I don’t think of myself as actually good.  My goal is to always finish…everything else is gravy!  That’s the mentality I tried to share with Marilyn.

On race day, we woke up early to get Andrew ready and then headed out to Dockweiler.  We picked up our numbers and swag and started to get warmed up.  I could tell Marilyn was nervous and I tried my best to relax her.  I think she just wanted the race to begin already

When the horn sounded, we started off.  Andrew, sleeping in the BOB stroller, being pushed by me and jogging next to Marilyn.  I actually think we were on a great pace.  Marilyn walked a few times but for the most part, we were running.  Every so often, I would try to give her words of encouragement.  It’s a fine balance between being encouraging and being told to shut up lol.  I think I toed the line well  The best part was actually crossing the finish line together (despite what the official time actually captured).  I think we have found a new hobby to do together!

I’m so proud of Marilyn.  I knew she was really tired and yet she kept on trucking.  She never quit and I think she actually had fun…well afterwards anyways
